Verstappen’s Racing DNA Evident in Rookie Bortoleto, Says Sauber Boss
Sauber team boss Jonathan Wheatley sees striking similarities between Formula 1 rookie Gabriel Bortoleto and four-time world champion Max Verstappen.
“Both inherently naturally fast. Actually, both race each other on the simulator either side of a race weekend as well,” Wheatley revealed.
The comparison carries significant weight considering Wheatley’s history with both drivers. He worked closely with Verstappen during his time as Red Bull Racing’s sporting director before taking the helm at Sauber this season.
Wheatley’s relationship with Verstappen stretches back years.
“I’ve known his father, I’ve known the family for years, known Max since he was a tiny little boy,” he explained.
While he’s just getting to know Bortoleto, the patterns are unmistakable. What makes both drivers special isn’t just raw speed but their mental capacity while racing.
“Both just seem to have that capacity to drive the car but have a load more capacity left to think about the rest of the situation,” Wheatley said.
This mental bandwidth is increasingly crucial in modern F1, where drivers must manage complex car systems while pushing the limits of performance.
Wheatley pointed to another shared trait that separates elite drivers from the pack.
“These guys are ultra competitive and they’re looking for every single advantage in everything.”
It’s not just about talent but dedication too.
“They both share a great work ethic and a love for racing. Both of them given an opportunity of driving something else, they’re on the simulator,” he added.
The connection between the two goes beyond similarities noted by team management. Bortoleto frequently mentions his strong relationship with Verstappen, often seeking advice from the champion driver. The pair regularly compete together during Team Redline sim racing streams.
Bortoleto has impressed in his rookie campaign. He’s already collected 18 points, with his standout performance coming in Hungary where he finished sixth.
It’s not just Wheatley who sees something special in the Brazilian. Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso has called Bortoleto “the best of his generation” – high praise from one of F1’s most respected veterans.
Can Bortoleto follow Verstappen’s meteoric trajectory? While it’s early days, having the same racing DNA as a four-time world champion certainly points to a promising future.
