Red Bull might just have the guts to swap out Sergio Perez right now, even though he’s gearing up for his home race in Mexico.
In the recent United States Grand Prix, Perez had a tough time keeping up with Verstappen. He ended up behind all drivers from the top four teams, except Hamilton who didn’t finish. George Russell, starting from the pit lane, also finished ahead of him. Meanwhile, Verstappen snagged a podium spot, leaving Lando Norris behind. Ferrari’s one-two finish tightened their gap with Red Bull in the Constructors’ Championship to just eight points.
Johnny Herbert commented on this situation, saying Red Bull might drop to third if they don’t act fast. “Red Bull are potentially going to lose second place in the Constructors’ because they’ve only got one man doing the job again,” he shared with Genting Casinos. While Perez did score some points, it pales compared to Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz who are neck and neck and raking in big points.
Fans might wonder if this spells the end for Perez at Red Bull. Herbert thinks it’s possible: “Sergio is delivering but not quite delivering enough, so do they replace him now? I think yes.” He believes Red Bull should act quickly to secure their position in the standings.
Who Could Step In If Perez Leaves?
Perez kicked off the season strong with Red Bull securing three one-two finishes early on. But since then, podiums have eluded him. Herbert has an idea for a replacement.
“Maybe they’ll keep Perez for Mexico and decide by Brazil,” Herbert suggested. He feels Yuki Tsunoda deserves a shot due to his consistent performance this year. “Yuki has done a brilliant job this year,” he praised, highlighting Tsunoda’s impressive qualifying skills.
Though Tsunoda’s race performance was once shaky, Herbert notes improvement there too. “I’d like Yuki to be given a chance,” he said optimistically. Facing Max is no easy task, but Herbert believes Tsunoda could hold his own.
Fans might be excited about such a change!
What do you think? Should Red Bull take a bold step or stick with Perez?
