Vowles Clarifies: No Sponsorship Deal with Colapinto

Franco Colapinto is now driving for Williams.

He took over from Logan Sargeant, who was removed from the Formula 1 seat. There were whispers that Colapinto got the spot because of a sponsorship deal, but team boss James Vowles quickly shut down those rumors.

Vowles debunks rumours surrounding Colapinto

Vowles said, “What I’ll make very clear to everyone here is no sponsorship was linked to signing him. Actually, we signed him at the point of not knowing anything in the future.”

He did mention that some Argentine companies are sponsoring Williams, but it has nothing to do with Colapinto. “A number of Argentine companies, of which there are many, are calling, and they’re paying market rates for stickers on the car, fundamentally. So, it’s not being related to Franco,” he explained. These companies just want to be part of the team’s journey beyond 2024. Fans might think this is a smart move by Williams.

“You’ll see stickers appearing on the car around Baku time,” Vowles added. He emphasized again that these sponsors are not connected to Colapinto.

“But at the point of choosing Franco, there was no finance involved in it,” Vowles continued. He also mentioned that other sources had offered money, but they weren’t interested in that. “This is about investing in our academy and in our future,” he concluded.
