Sebastian Vettel might be making a comeback to racing – but not where you’d expect.
The four-time Formula 1 champion, who walked away from F1 after the 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, could be eyeing a completely different challenge: the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans race.
This isn’t just idle gossip. Vettel actually did a test drive for Porsche last year, which got everyone talking about him possibly joining their team for Le Mans.
While it didn’t happen for this year’s race, 2025 might be different. Porsche’s still got an empty seat in one of their three cars, and they’re definitely interested in Vettel.
"I don’t know," was all Thomas Laudenbach, Porsche’s motorsport boss, would say when asked about it recently. But the fact that they’re still talking about Vettel shows there might be something to these rumors.
There’s some competition for that spot, though. Pascal Wehrlein, who’s currently tearing it up as Formula E world champion, is apparently the frontrunner. Wehrlein’s got F1 experience too – he used to race for Manor and Sauber.
It’s pretty interesting to think about Vettel taking on Le Mans. It’s a totally different beast from F1 – imagine racing for 24 hours straight instead of just a couple of hours.
For racing fans, seeing Vettel back on track would be huge, even if it’s not in an F1 car. The German driver’s still only 36, so he’s definitely got some racing left in him.
We’ll just have to wait and see if he decides to take on one of motorsport’s toughest challenges.
