Max Verstappen has shared an emotional tribute to Christian Horner following the shock announcement of the team boss’s immediate departure from Red Bull on Wednesday morning.
“From my first race win, to four world championships, we have shared incredible successes. Winning memorable races and breaking countless records. Thank you for everything, Christian!” Verstappen wrote.
The four-time world champion was actually in the Netherlands when the news broke. His private jet landed early Wednesday morning, though it’s not clear why he was visiting. He has since left the country.
Horner personally delivered the bombshell news to employees at Red Bull’s Milton Keynes factory.
Behind the scenes, this wasn’t a sudden decision. Sources tell us that Red Bull’s leadership made the call on Tuesday, immediately informing key stakeholders and sponsors.
The timing is especially dramatic considering Verstappen’s incredible success under Horner’s leadership. Every single one of Max’s F1 triumphs – from his very first win to all four of his world championships – came with Horner at the helm.
It’s a stunning end to Horner’s run with the team. He’s been in charge since Red Bull first entered Formula 1, building it from an upstart energy drink company’s side project into a dominant racing powerhouse.
Despite recent performance struggles and growing team tensions, Verstappen’s message highlights the strong bond formed through their years of success together.
What this means for Red Bull’s future – and Verstappen’s – remains to be seen.
