The crash between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton at the 2021 British Grand Prix had a huge impact on Verstappen.
He revealed that he faced serious vision problems after the incident.
Verstappen’s Vision Issues Post-Silverstone Crash
During their intense battle at Silverstone, Hamilton and Verstappen clashed while vying for victory and the championship. At Copse corner, Hamilton’s car nudged Verstappen’s, causing him to crash into the tyre barriers with tremendous force.
Verstappen was taken to the hospital but was released later that evening. However, he didn’t escape without issues. “Since my crash at Silverstone, I had been struggling with vision problems, especially on hilly tracks or circuits with a lot of advertising signs on the side of the track,” said Verstappen in an interview with Red Bulletin.
Reflecting on his win at the United States Grand Prix, which he considers one of his best victories, he shared: “In this race, I fought not only against Lewis but also against blurred vision. It was like driving at 300 km/h in a speedboat. I’ve never told you this before, but for a few laps it was so bad that I seriously considered pulling the car over.”
“The only thing that helped was concentrating on my breathing while Lewis was panting down my neck. This was an important win that I desperately needed in the battle for the championship,” added Verstappen candidly.
Fans might find this revelation quite surprising given his performance during those races.
Imagine racing at such high speeds while dealing with blurry vision!
