Verstappen Considers Himself Fortunate: ‘I Didn’t Have to Do That’

Max Verstappen says he chose to start karting on his own, not because his family pushed him into it. His dad, Jos, was in Formula 1, and his mom loved racing too.

When Max was four, he saw a kid even younger driving a mini-kart. He asked his dad if he could try it too, but Jos said no at first because Max needed to be older. “I kept pushing until I got a kart,” Max shared with GQ Italia. Six months later, with some help from his mom, Max got his first kart.

Max feels lucky that his parents didn’t force him into racing like some parents do. They noticed how much he loved it and supported him. Racing was their passion too, so they were happy to help him improve.

His parents had different ways of supporting him. Max spent lots of time with his dad at races; Jos was not just a mechanic but also a teacher who built engines. Meanwhile, his mom created a relaxed atmosphere and gave her opinions instead of instructions. This made dinner conversations about racing very special for Max.

Fans might think it’s cool how Max’s parents balanced support without pressure.

The way Max talks about his childhood shows how important family support is in chasing dreams. What do you think about this approach?
