Max Verstappen closed the gap in the championship after a dramatic Sprint race that saw both McLarens crash out on the opening lap.
“It brings me a bit closer for sure, which I think is nice for everyone. Maybe not for them, but in general for everyone,” Verstappen said after taking the checkered flag at the United States Grand Prix Sprint.
The world champion picked up eight crucial points on Saturday while championship rivals Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri scored nothing.
The drama unfolded on Lap 1 when Piastri made contact with Nico Hulkenberg, sending the Australian spinning into his teammate Norris.
Verstappen now sits 55 points behind Piastri in the drivers’ standings.
Despite the perfect outcome in terms of points, the Dutchman wasn’t completely satisfied with his performance.
“I just take it race by race. I just try to do the best I can. Today yes, perfect for me to get those points,” he explained.
But looking ahead to Sunday’s main event, Verstappen showed concerns about his pace.
“I was not entirely happy with the pace in the sprint and I know if we want to win tomorrow, we need to be better. And that’s what I’ll just focus on,” the Red Bull driver admitted.
The championship battle has suddenly become more interesting with several races still remaining in the season.
When asked about his title chances, Verstappen remained pragmatic: “It’s not about believing in it. I just take it race by race.”
The gap closing between the frontrunners means fans can expect an even more intense battle as the season heads toward its conclusion.
