Toyota Secures One-Two Finish in WEC Interlagos Qualifying, Kobayashi Leads #7 to Pole

Toyota bounced back strong in qualifying for the 6 Hours of Sao Paulo after a close call at Le Mans.

They secured the front row with a one-two finish in the hyperpole session of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) race.

Kamui Kobayashi, racing with Mike Conway and Nyck de Vries, was just 0.122 seconds quicker than Sebastien Buemi’s Toyota team, which includes Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa. The competition at Interlagos was tight, with the #5 Porsche Penske finishing third, less than two-tenths behind Toyota. Alex Lynn’s #2 Cadillac and Kevin Estre’s #6 Porsche rounded out the top five.

Ferrari struggled during qualifying. The #50 Ferrari, which won Le Mans, could only manage sixth place—almost four-tenths behind Toyota. Their second car didn’t fare much better, ending up ninth and nearly eight-tenths off pole position. However, Alessandro Pier Guidi did beat Robin Frijns’ BMW to make it into hyperpole.

Iron Ladies fastest in GT cars

In LMP3 class (no LMP2 here), Iron Dames took pole position decisively. Sarah Bovy led her all-female team to a time four-tenths faster than their nearest rival. Last year’s Le Mans winners in this class, Manthey EMA team, ended up fifth.

Fans might be surprised by Ferrari’s performance given their recent win at Le Mans.
