Lewis Hamilton watched as George Russell won his second Grand Prix, taking advantage of the clash between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. Mercedes has only won two races since 2021, both by Russell. Hamilton hasn’t won in nearly 1,000 days, but Toto Wolff promised him at least one more victory.
Hamilton surprised everyone by announcing a move to Ferrari for 2025. After years of success with Mercedes and Wolff, he’s ready for a new challenge. Mercedes struggled with the new rules introduced in 2022 and only recently became competitive again.
Toto Wolff makes Hamilton a promise
Mercedes made upgrades and secured podium finishes in the last three races. Russell was already set for a podium before the Norris-Verstappen crash. Now that Mercedes is faster, it’s up to the drivers to deliver top results. Hamilton admitted he hasn’t been performing well lately, calling his race in Canada one of his worst ever.
Wolff agrees with Hamilton’s self-assessment: “He had a bad spell. As a racing driver, it can be mind-crashing if you feel like you are not able to deliver your best performances in races. I just saw him now. He needs to go through this. This is not a situation that suddenly he has unlearned driving. Things have come together. He had a brilliant race in Barcelona, so we have just got to dive through this,” Wolff told Sky Sports.
Fans might think it’s about time for Hamilton’s comeback!
With only 13 races left in his Mercedes career, Wolff made a bold promise: “We are going to win a race with him this year,” he concluded.
