Stella Praises McLaren as Norris Assists Piastri to Baku Victory

McLaren announced before the Italian Grand Prix that they would support Lando Norris in his fight against Max Verstappen for the world title, but in Baku, Norris had to help Oscar Piastri during the race. Team principal Andrea Stella explained why Norris was asked to assist Piastri, who secured his second F1 victory last Sunday.

During the first pit stops, Norris stayed out longer on an alternative strategy and was asked to slow down Sergio Perez. Perez had already switched to hard tyres while also trying to understand Piastri’s position.

“That message was because of Perez,” Stella said. “Perez was undercutting. Without Lando’s help, Perez could have pitted ahead of Oscar, and the race could have been very different. So I think 50% of Oscar’s victory today is shared with Lando.”

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Stella was pleased with how the team worked together during this Grand Prix. He said it shows they approach racing as one team. They discussed before the weekend that they might need to favor one driver over another, but their goal is always to maximize results for the team. If one driver needs help, they will provide it, and the other driver will do it too. This teamwork is a strength when competing in such a tight field.

Fans might think this strategy is smart and fair.

Stella also praised Piastri’s crucial move during the race. Not only did Norris’ help matter, but Piastri’s timing in overtaking Charles Leclerc was key. “Apart from Oscar overtaking Leclerc, whoever led could have won today because it’s easier on tyres when you’re leading than following,” he explained. Leclerc finished with worn-out tyres because he had to push them hard while being just one second behind for many laps.

Sometimes it’s all about being at the right place at the right time!
