Schumacher Recommends Szafnauer for Haas Team Boss Role Due to Technical Expertise

Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher believes Otmar Szafnauer would have been a better choice as the new team boss for Haas in Formula 1, following the departure of Guenther Steiner, instead of the appointed Ayao Komatsu.

Highlights

‣ Ayao Komatsu has taken over as the new team boss of US constructor Haas in Formula 1, following the departure of Guenther Steiner.
‣ Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher suggested that Otmar Szafnauer would have been a better choice for the team boss position.
‣ Szafnauer, who is well-known in Formula 1 and has technical expertise, left Alpine after a mediocre start to 2023.
‣ Schumacher expressed regret over Steiner’s departure, describing him as a “brand” in Formula 1.

So, Ayao Komatsu is now the big cheese at Haas, huh? Stepped into the shoes of Guenther Steiner, who’s left the Formula 1 scene. But, you know who Ralf Schumacher had in mind for the job? Not Komatsu. Nope. He was thinking Otmar Szafnauer. Yeah, the guy who used to be with Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg‘s team.

Szafnauer as a replacement? Hmm, could be.

Schumacher told Formel1.de, “We need a motivator. A real team player.” And he reckons Otmar’s the guy. “He’s a known face in Formula 1. Got the expertise too. Technical stuff, for instance.”

But Otmar’s not with Alpine anymore. Left after a so-so start to 2023. The Belgian Grand Prix was his last. His departure? Left a gaping hole in the French team. CEO Laurent Rossi, sporting director Alan Permane, and Pat Fry also packed their bags.

Steiner’s exit? Schumacher’s got thoughts.

Schumacher’s not thrilled about Steiner’s departure. “He was a real brand. Sad to see him leave Formula 1,” said the German with six Formula 1 victories under his belt. “But maybe it was time for fresh blood. Guess we’ll see.”
