Russell’s Car Troubles at Silverstone: What Happened?

Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton were thrilled after winning the British Grand Prix, but George Russell had a rough day with a DNF at Silverstone.

Russell started strong by securing pole position on Saturday, but his race ended early due to car trouble. Technical director Andrew Shovlin later explained what went wrong with Russell’s W15.

Water System Leak Ends Russell’s Race

“Unfortunately, we knew there was an issue early in the race,” Shovlin said during Mercedes’ debrief after the British GP. “We tracked it from the first stint. It was linked to a leak in the water system causing pressure problems. When we stopped the car, it was to protect the power unit. We knew we wouldn’t finish the race and didn’t want to risk damaging the power unit further, which could lead to penalties later.”

Could Russell Have Won?

The spotlight was on Hamilton’s win at his last home race with Mercedes. But what if Russell hadn’t crashed out? “With changing conditions, it’s hard to say where we would have finished,” Shovlin admitted. “If it had been dry from start to finish, seeing how George got off the line and built a gap, he might have had an easy afternoon.”

Hamilton thrives at Silverstone with nine wins under his belt . Meanwhile, Russell is still trying to make his mark at his home track without any podium finishes yet.

Fans might wonder if this setback will affect Russell’s confidence moving forward.

The question remains: What do you think about Russell’s chances next time?
