Russell Confident in Mercedes’ Continued Progress for 2024

Since the 2022 rule changes in Formula 1, Mercedes has struggled to stay on top.

From 2014 to 2021, they dominated both Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships, but they’ve only won one race since the new rules came into play. They tried many upgrades to regain their lead but failed each time.

Mercedes experimented with a ‘sidepodless’ car, which didn’t work at all. They kept thinking they had fixed their issues after a good race but then fell short in the next one.

Why Russell is confident in Mercedes

In 2024, things seem different for them. New updates at the Canadian Grand Prix helped George Russell grab pole position, showing the W15’s potential. Both he and Lewis Hamilton finished P3 and P4 in Montreal and are set to start strong at the Spanish Grand Prix.

When asked if these upgrades were another ‘false dawn,’ Russell said: “You never know 100 per cent. But this is for sure the most confident we have been over the last three years of what we’ve brought to the car.”

Russell made mistakes in Montreal that cost him a win chance but believes his car has potential. “We’re all three years into these regs,” he added. “I think we all know what makes a good race car in this sort of era.”

Fans might feel hopeful about these changes.

He also mentioned how close it is between the top four teams now, saying small differences can greatly impact grid positions. That’s what makes Formula 1 exciting!
