Russell Concerned Over FIA Rule Changes Impact on F1

F1 star George Russell has mixed feelings about the massive changes coming to Formula 1, as the sport gears up for what could be its most transformative period in recent history.

The 2025 season will be the last under current rules, and there’s a lot happening. A new team is joining, rules are changing, and the sport’s governing body is going through major shake-ups.

“From a driver’s perspective, there’s more opportunity,” Russell says about Cadillac joining F1 in 2026. “Twenty race seats, it’s always very challenging to get your chance.”

He’s especially excited about what this means for upcoming drivers.

“It’s a good opportunity for the next generation,” he told reporters. “There seems to be a lot of movement in Formula One. It keeps you on your toes. You’ve got to keep on performing.”

But not everything’s looking rosy.

Russell’s got some serious concerns about how the FIA (Formula 1’s governing body) is handling things. “When it comes to the FIA, so much is changing, too much is changing and too quickly,” he says, pointing to the recent leadership shuffles that have raised eyebrows in the paddock.

There’s one bright spot though – he’s got complete faith in F1’s commercial leadership.

“Everybody has faith in Liberty and faith in Stefano [Domenicali],” Russell explains. “He was a racer and he’s got racing in his blood, so he’s doing everything he can to get the sport in the best place possible.”

But Russell’s biggest worry? Making sure F1 doesn’t lose its momentum.

“We just need to make sure that the sport stays in this position or continues to grow,” he says. “With all of this change…I hope it’s not going to have a negative impact.”
