Russell Backs Sainz as Drivers Unite Against FIA Controversy

Over the past season, the GPDA has stepped up its activity, partly in response to the various fines and community service penalties handed out to drivers.

Now, the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association has expanded its leadership team with Carlos Sainz joining the fold.

George Russell, who continues his role as a Driver Director, is clearly pleased with the new addition.

“It’s great to have Carlos as part of the GPDA,” Russell said. “I think he’s obviously a great driver, a really smart, wise individual, and has been around for a long time.”

Russell pointed out that having multiple driver directors isn’t new for the organization.

“In the past, there was always more than one driver director.”

The change comes as a welcome relief for Russell, who’s been shouldering the responsibility alone recently.

“Since it’s just been myself for the last couple of years, I’m happy that the questions can be shared out a little bit more evenly between me and another driver,” he admitted.

Esteban Ocon has also voiced his support for Sainz’s appointment to the leadership position.

“Carlos has been a very experienced driver for many years and a very successful driver as well,” Ocon said. “I think we’re all happy, obviously that he stepped up and that’s why he’s up there.”

The move suggests drivers are looking to strengthen their collective voice in the sport as the GPDA continues to become more prominent in addressing issues that affect competitors.
