Red Bull Racing has been closely watching their drivers all season.
Both Sergio Perez and Daniel Ricciardo have felt the heat from this scrutiny. There’s a chance that the Singapore Grand Prix might have been Ricciardo’s last race in F1. Laurent Mekies thinks Red Bull might have been too open about the drivers’ futures.
VCARB: ‘Maybe been too open about Ricciardo’s future’
Mekies shared with SiriusXM, “There is nothing wrong with reviewing your drivers’ performance every few races, and I think we have perhaps been too public about it.” He mentioned that they had these reviews before the summer break and planned another after Singapore.
He added, “So it’s part of the game,” but admitted that sometimes the pressure can be too much, especially for Daniel. This season has had its ups and downs for him, with some races being calm and others very tough. Athletes at this level know how to handle pressure, but it’s not always necessary.
Fans might think it’s unfair how much pressure is put on these drivers.
Rumors about Ricciardo’s future were rampant during the Singapore Grand Prix. Many thought it was his last race. However, Christian Horner clarified that no decision had been made yet, though he did say Ricciardo is “just one piece of the jigsaw”.
