Red Bull Racing has scrapped plans for a flashy new look at this year’s Las Vegas Grand Prix, sticking with their classic colors instead. The reason? Every extra drop of paint counts when you’re trying to keep these speed machines as light as possible.
That didn’t stop them from giving fans a sneak peek at what could have been, though. The team recently showed off their special design during a demonstration run in Galway, Ireland.
Thousands of Irish fans got to see F1 legends David Coulthard and Patrick Friesacher tear up the streets in an RB7 – the same car Sebastian Vettel used to grab his third world title back in 2012.
The show car traded Red Bull’s signature dark blue for a striking light blue paint job. But don’t expect to see that look under the bright lights of Vegas.
It’s quite a change from last year, when Red Bull let fans design the team’s cars for all three U.S. races. But with every gram of weight making a difference in F1, they’re playing it safe this time around.
Speaking of Vegas, Max Verstappen could clinch his fourth straight World Championship this weekend. He’s sitting pretty with a 62-point lead over McLaren’s Lando Norris.
The math is simple: Norris needs to cut that gap by at least three points to keep his championship dreams alive. After Vegas, there’ll only be 60 points up for grabs in the season.
The bright lights of the Strip might not see a special Red Bull livery, but they might just witness another piece of F1 history if Verstappen seals the deal.
