Red Bull Feels Budget Cap Impact: ‘Fighting to Retain Every Employee’

Red Bull Racing has lost some top staff recently due to budget limits.

The team can’t offer everyone huge salaries, leading to challenges. Helmut Marko is aware other teams are trying to poach their talent but vows to “fight for every employee.”

Many successful Red Bull members have moved to other teams for better pay. Dan Fallows joined Aston Martin, Rob Marshall went to McLaren, Lee Stevenson and Jonathan Wheatley moved to Audi, and Adrian Newey’s next move is still unknown. These moves happened because they got offers that Red Bull couldn’t match.

Wheatley had been with Red Bull for years but saw no chance of promotion since only Christian Horner was above him. Audi lured him with a team principal role and a hefty salary. “We could not have matched that,” Marko admitted in an interview.

Red Bull ‘fighting’ for employees

Top jobs at Red Bull are few, and money is tight due to the cost cap. While three top earners’ salaries don’t count towards the cap, everyone else’s does. The team, including Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, must stick to the budget.

Because of this, raising salaries isn’t an option. Instead, Red Bull has to be clever and resourceful with its staff. But Marko feels good about their current team. “We are broad and well-positioned, and we will fight for every employee,” he said, determined not to lose more key people.

Recently, important leaders extended their contracts with Red Bull: Paul Monaghan, Pierre Waché, Enrico Balbo, and Ben Waterhouse all committed long-term.

Fans might think it’s tough for Red Bull right now.
