Mitch Evans has come close but missed out on the Formula E title again last season. For the past three years, he finished second, third, and then second again.
Despite his skills, he believes that a lack of sponsorship money has kept him from getting opportunities in Formula 1. “A lot of guys get opportunities because they bring money,” Evans told Total Motorsport. “Look at Sergio Perez, you can’t compete against that. He’s not a bad driver but you are competing against that.”
Evans finds the sport ‘demented’
According to Evans, motorsport is unfair compared to sports like tennis or football, where talent alone can take you to the top. In motorsport, money plays a huge role. “It’s hard to go up against a driver on pure merit. That’s the way it is,” he said, expressing sadness over drivers having to pay big bucks just to be test drivers.
He pointed out Nyck de Vries as an example of how unpredictable the sport can be. “When you are really in the thick of it and know how it works, the sport is demented. Look at Nyck de Vries. He was not going to get a chance at all for an F1 seat, then he got a free chance when Alex Albon got sick [at the 2021 Italian GP], did a good job and all of a sudden he’s the best thing since sliced bread. He’s the same driver he’s been for all the other years.”
Fans might think it’s really tough for talented drivers without big sponsors to make it in motorsport.
Isn’t it crazy how things work out sometimes? What do you think about this?
