Sergio Perez is at a critical point in his career. He made it clear on Sunday that he will only discuss his future once more.
Red Bull’s top bosses are meeting today to decide if Perez stays with the team.
Decision Day for Perez
Nobody wants to call it an ultimatum, but Helmut Marko said before the Hungarian Grand Prix that Perez had until the summer break to prove himself. Unfortunately, he crashed in Hungary and didn’t perform well at Spa either. Today, Christian Horner and Marko are meeting in England to decide if Perez has done enough.
The outcome of this meeting is uncertain. While Perez hasn’t impressed recently, Red Bull might still keep him for other reasons. He brings in money from sponsors, helps sell Red Bull cans in Mexico, and gets along well with Max Verstappen. However, his poor performance has hurt Red Bull’s lead in the constructors’ championship.
No Clear Replacement
Choosing whether to keep or drop Perez is tough because there isn’t an obvious replacement. Daniel Ricciardo wants back in but hasn’t been performing like he used to. Fans might wonder if he’s reliable enough as Verstappen’s teammate.
Liam Lawson drove five races for AlphaTauri in 2023 but wasn’t given a permanent seat, suggesting he’s not seen as a top talent by Red Bull. Could he handle the pressure of racing alongside Verstappen? It’s risky.
Yuki Tsunoda is another option but seems unlikely since Christian Horner doesn’t favor him much. Tsunoda even mentioned at Spa that he hasn’t spoken with Horner or Marko for a long time.
The Stakes Are High
Today is crucial for Perez’s future in Formula 1. If he’s let go despite having a contract, finding another seat will be hard for 2025 and beyond. Audi could be an option, but there’s no indication they’re interested right now .
Fans are probably anxious about what will happen next!
What do you think? Should Red Bull keep Perez or look for someone new?
