Newey Confirms Continued Involvement at Red Bull Until Departure

Adrian Newey won’t be influencing technical matters at Red Bull Racing until he retires in 2025, but he still helps with strategy during Formula 1 races.

Newey’s main project now is the RB17 hypercar, which he revealed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. However, his role isn’t limited to just that.

Newey Still Active with Red Bull

Even though Newey has announced his departure and is technically on gardening leave, he’s attending several Grands Prix for Red Bull this year. Fans might find it surprising that despite being set to join a rival team next year, he’s still involved in race weekends.

In an interview with Motorsport.com, Newey explained that his work during these weekends focuses mainly on strategy. He also takes time to talk briefly with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. “When I have been – so Miami and Monaco [and Silverstone] – then [it’s about] primarily talking to the drivers a little bit. And then a bit involved in strategy through the races. But it’s also been [about] meeting customers – 17 clients and customers,” said Newey, referring to the RB17 hypercar.

The Red Bull Advanced Technologies project is crucial for the team according to Newey. “And everybody, therefore, is involved not only in the 17 itself but in how Red Bull goes about Formula 1 weekends. And that will continue regardless of my physically being present,” he added.

Fans might think it’s cool that Newey still contributes even when he’s not there physically.
