Montoya Advises Red Bull: Target This Driver Instead of Colapinto

Rumors swirl every day about who might join Max Verstappen at Red Bull Racing next season. Juan Pablo Montoya has a surprising idea for the team.

Montoya suggests that instead of Franco Colapinto, Red Bull should consider Carlos Sainz as Verstappen’s teammate. Colapinto, a rookie, caught attention after stepping in for Logan Sargeant at Williams. However, he doesn’t have a spot secured for next year since Williams already has two drivers lined up. While there are whispers of him joining Red Bull, it would mean the team paying a fee to get him. Montoya believes if Red Bull is going to pay for someone, it should be Sainz.

Montoya’s Bold Proposal

“If I were Christian Horner,” Montoya shared with W Radio Colombia, “I’d tell Williams: ‘Keep Colapinto and give me Sainz.’ Why risk swapping Checo, who has won races, with a rookie alongside Max?” He thinks it’s better to let Colapinto develop further. Montoya added that Carlos might have an agreement with Williams allowing him to leave if he doesn’t get podiums or wins.

Montoya continued by saying that Red Bull could offer Williams money now for Carlos rather than waiting a year when they might lose him for free. “If I were Red Bull,” he said, “I’d choose Carlos over Colapinto.”

Perez’s Future at Red Bull

Montoya also predicts Sergio Perez will stay with Red Bull through 2025. He compared Perez’s situation to Daniel Ricciardo‘s, noting that Perez earns significantly more money. “Checo gets lots of criticism and some want him out,” Montoya remarked. But fans may think it’s unfair because he’s not doing poorly.

He mentioned that while many push for another driver in the car, the reality behind closed doors remains unknown. For Colapinto, staying on the grid depends on whether Sainz moves to Red Bull and opens up a spot at Williams.

What do you think? Should Red Bull go for experience or take a chance on fresh talent?
