Mercedes’ Antonelli Signing: Rosberg Backs F1 Junior’s “Huge Potential”

Mercedes has made a stunning move by signing 17-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli to race alongside George Russell in 2025. The Italian prodigy will step directly into one of F1’s top cars – something that’s only happened a handful of times in the sport’s history.

The last driver to make such a dramatic jump? Lewis Hamilton, the very man Antonelli will replace.

Former world champion Nico Rosberg calls it a “bold” decision by Mercedes, but he’s got a unique perspective on the teenage sensation.

“He was racing in my Karting Academy in 2019 and I saw already at that age what kind of impressive talent he was,” Rosberg says. “You can’t ignore the potential this guy has.”

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff is already working to protect his young star. He’s been careful to lower expectations for Antonelli’s rookie season, knowing that mistakes are part of the learning process.

It’s a smart move. F1 isn’t exactly known for its patience with young drivers.

“He will certainly make mistakes in 2025,” Rosberg admits, “but I know Mercedes will support him well. He has a bright future ahead of him and I’m excited to see how he adapts to F1.”

The pressure on Antonelli will be intense. He’s not just joining any team – he’s stepping into a Mercedes seat next to George Russell, one of F1’s fastest young talents.

Rosberg, who knows a thing or two about pressure at Mercedes, believes mentorship will be crucial for the teenager’s success.

“It is fundamental. The early seasons are full of challenges, and having someone experienced to guide you can really make a difference,” he explains. “F1 can be ruthless and, after a few bad performances, things can change quickly for them.”

The young Italian will need a strong support system. But if Mercedes handles this right, they might just have found their next superstar.
