McLaren is on the verge of making history, but team boss Andrea Stella isn’t counting his chickens just yet.
The iconic British team holds a 21-point lead over Ferrari heading into the season finale at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit. It’s their best shot at a championship since 1998.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc faces a 10-place grid penalty, but Stella isn’t breathing any easier.
“Not at all. I guess you expected this answer,” Stella said with a slight smile during the team principal’s press conference. “We talk about Charles Leclerc, we talk about Ferrari. It’s a very strong combination.”
He’s seen enough Formula 1 drama to know better than to celebrate early.
“Even with the penalty, I wouldn’t be surprised if we can see them very rapidly fighting for the front positions. So, nothing changes. We keep remaining calm, focused and full of energy.”
It’s been a long drought for both teams. McLaren’s last constructors’ title came in 1998, while Ferrari has been waiting since 2008. Since then, only Red Bull and Mercedes have dominated the sport – with one surprise win by Brawn GP in 2009.
Stella knows what it takes to win championships, having claimed victory with Ferrari earlier in his career. But this time feels different.
“McLaren is iconic, prestigious, and one of the most important teams in Formula 1,” he said, choosing his words carefully. “We have not won a championship since 1998. So, I guess the meaning is making a piece of history.”
The usually reserved Italian let his guard down for just a moment.
“For me personally, and for the entire team, we will be extremely proud to add to this great legacy.”
The championship showdown kicks off this weekend, with every point crucial in what could be McLaren’s return to glory.
