McLaren Chief Mechanic Joins Aston Martin F1 Team as Technical Lead

Another big move is shaking up Formula 1’s technical landscape. Marc Cox, a veteran McLaren mechanic, is heading to Aston Martin as their new Chief Mechanic for 2025.

Cox spent an incredible 17 years with McLaren before stepping away in 2021. Now he’s ready for his next challenge with the team that’s been making waves with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll behind the wheel.

"After 17 years with McLaren it’s time for my next chapter," Cox shared on X (formerly Twitter). "It’s gone by so fast, I had a blast and met some amazing people along the way. I’ll miss you papaya family."

It’s been quite a journey for Cox. After leaving McLaren’s F1 team in 2021, he didn’t go far – he stuck with the brand but switched to their Extreme E racing program. Now he’s making his return to the F1 paddock in a top role.

This isn’t the only major technical staff movement in F1 lately.

Lee Stevenson, Red Bull Racing’s long-time Chief Mechanic, announced after this year’s Australian Grand Prix that he’s joining Sauber. He’ll take on the same role there in 2025, just as the team prepares for its transformation into Audi’s works team in 2026.

These behind-the-scenes moves might not grab headlines like driver transfers, but they’re just as crucial to a team’s success. With Aston Martin’s ambitious plans and their impressive progress over the last couple seasons, Cox’s experience could prove invaluable.
