Helmut Marko has picked his champion between McLaren’s rising stars, and his answer might surprise you.
Red Bull’s outspoken advisor believes Oscar Piastri has the edge over teammate Lando Norris in the battle for this year’s Formula 1 title.
“Both have their advantages,” Marko explained. “On one lap, Lando Norris might be faster. On the other hand, Oscar Piastri is the more cool-headed one and seems to be mentally stronger.”
The 82-year-old didn’t hesitate to make his prediction.
“I believe, based on these factors and the lead he has, that Piastri is the favourite.”
With just eight races left, Piastri currently enjoys a comfortable 31-point cushion over Norris in the championship standings.
What makes this rivalry particularly fascinating is how quickly McLaren has transformed from midfield contender to the team to beat. Their stunning rise has relegated even Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to championship outsider.
## Can Verstappen still fight for the title?
Marko was surprisingly candid about his own driver’s chances.
“I think the field is too balanced; there won’t be any dominance,” he admitted. “Piastri and Norris will alternate positions. I wouldn’t write off Ferrari either.”
While not completely giving up hope, Marko’s assessment was brutally honest.
“It’s in the back of our minds. We’re not giving up. But realistically, I would say: no chance of winning the world title.”
Verstappen currently sits third in the standings behind both McLaren drivers. Though his championship hopes may be fading, the four-time world champion could still play kingmaker in the McLaren battle.
The Dutch driver’s performance in the remaining races might ultimately determine whether it’s Piastri or Norris who lifts the trophy.
What seemed unthinkable at the start of the season has become reality – Red Bull watching from the sidelines as McLaren’s young guns fight for the championship.
