Verstappen Grabs No. 3 from Ricciardo After “A Few Drinks”
Max Verstappen revealed the secret behind securing Daniel Ricciardo‘s iconic No. 3 for the 2026 season – and it involved some good old-fashioned socializing.
“A few drinks together, yeah, that always helps,” the Dutch driver joked during his media session at Red Bull Racing’s livery launch.
Verstappen had to give up the champion’s No. 1 after Lando Norris clinched the 2025 Drivers’ Championship, ending Max’s incredible four-year reign at the top of Formula 1.
The 28-year-old had previously hinted at some unconventional options, including the eyebrow-raising number 69. But in the end, he went for something with more personal meaning.
Turns out No. 3 has always been special to him.
“My favourite number has always been three, apart from number one,” Verstappen explained in a recent Viaplay interview. “We can now swap, so it’ll be number 3.”
Before his championship days, fans knew Verstappen by his No. 33. But it seems he’s ready for a change.
“Number 33 was always fine, but I just like one 3 better than two,” he said. “I always said it represented double luck, but I’ve already had my luck in Formula 1.”
The move puts Verstappen in prestigious company. Racing legends like Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, and Fernando Alonso have all used the No. 3 during their storied careers.
It’s a significant change for fans who’ve associated the number with Ricciardo for years. The Australian driver made the digit famous with his trademark shoey celebrations on podiums around the world.
## Looking ahead to 2026
As the 2026 season approaches with its major regulation changes, racing under a new number might be the least of Verstappen’s adjustments.
