Max Verstappen reveals career-changing moment from 2018 season
“I had a turnaround in Montreal… that’s really when it clicked,” says the four-time world champion.
Verstappen pinpointed the 2018 Canadian Grand Prix as the exact moment everything changed in his Formula 1 career.
The Dutch driver opened up on the Talking Bulls podcast about how he pulled himself out of a frustrating downward spiral early that season.
“The first seven races, I think, I was just making mistakes myself, and then you get into a negative spiral. You try to push even harder, and it all just doesn’t work out,” Verstappen admitted.
He was clearly frustrated with himself during that tough stretch.
“I was really upset with myself, and then I had a turnaround in Montreal. I have to say, I think from that day, that’s really when it clicked.”
His third-place finish at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve marked the end of inconsistent performances and the beginning of something special.
Since that pivotal Canadian race, Verstappen has gone on to win a staggering 68 Grand Prix victories.
That’s quite a transformation from a young driver who was once struggling to find his footing.
## Among F1’s Greatest
Verstappen’s talent hasn’t gone unnoticed by racing legends. Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher recently named him among the sport’s all-time best.
The 50-year-old put Verstappen in the same category as his brother Michael Schumacher—high praise indeed.
What makes them special? According to Schumacher, it’s their relentless drive for improvement that sets them apart from their competitors.
