Max Pushed Limits, But He’s Allowed to Right Now

Karun Chandhok thinks it’s time to change the FIA’s rules for on-track battles. The recent clash between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris sparked debates about whether these regulations need an update.

During the United States Grand Prix, as the race was wrapping up, Norris was hot on Verstappen’s heels. This battle was crucial for the championship standings. Verstappen expertly blocked Norris, but when Norris saw a chance, he went for it.

Verstappen reached the corner first and used every inch of the track to push Norris wide, a move he’s known for. This forced Norris to pass off-track, thinking he’d avoid a penalty since it seemed like Verstappen pushed him off. But the FIA disagreed, giving Norris a five-second penalty for gaining an unfair advantage, dropping him back to P4 and boosting Verstappen’s lead by 57 points.

Chandhok Wants Rule Changes

Afterwards, some criticized Verstappen’s tactics, saying he didn’t even try to make the corner fairly. Chandhok took to X (formerly Twitter) after the Austin race, suggesting changes: “In my opinion, if the driver on the outside is more than 75% alongside – as Lando was – then they should be entitled to one car’s width on the exit of the corner.” He pointed out that current rules let Max push limits without breaking them.

Chandhok also mentioned that if there were gravel or a wall outside the kerb, Lando might not have risked staying out there so long. He agreed with the FIA’s decision under current rules that Norris should’ve given back his spot immediately after going off-track. Fans might wonder if these rules are fair or if they need a revamp.

What do you think? Should rules change or stay as they are?
