Things have been rough for Sergio Perez since he extended his contract with Red Bull Racing.
He’s had several crashes and poor results, sparking discussions about his future. Helmut Marko admits there’s a performance clause that could let Red Bull end Perez’s contract early.
Marko Confirms Performance Clause
Perez started the season well, but after the Miami Grand Prix, his performance dropped. Improving Perez’s form is crucial for Red Bull. “We need to make sure Perez regains his normal form,” Marko told OE24.
If Perez doesn’t improve, Red Bull might struggle in the constructors’ championship, especially with strong competition from McLaren. Marko explained Perez’s poor performance by saying, “With all the bad luck he has had, he is also mentally damaged.”
Rumors suggest a performance clause in Perez’s contract means if he’s more than 100 points behind Verstappen before the summer break – which he is – Red Bull can let him go. Marko didn’t deny this clause exists.
“Almost all top drivers have performance clauses in their contracts,” Marko said when asked about it. When questioned if this means Perez might not drive for Red Bull in 2025 despite his contract, Marko cryptically replied: “What is certain in Formula 1?”
Fans might think this news puts extra pressure on Perez to perform better soon.
