Helmut Marko is known for speaking his mind without hesitation. After a chaotic Mexican Grand Prix, he didn’t hold back in criticizing Sergio Perez, Liam Lawson, and Yuki Tsunoda.
In his Speedweek column, Marko shared his thoughts on Perez’s performance. He described it as “a bad weekend” and expressed disappointment over Perez’s early exit in qualifying. Despite knowing that qualifying isn’t Perez’s strong suit, Marko was surprised by the Mexican driver’s starting incident. Perez mispositioned his car in the starting box, which led to a five-second penalty. “For a man with his experience to misplace the car in his starting box is not smart and a huge shame,” he remarked.
Marko accepted Lawson’s excuse
Perez clashed on track with Liam Lawson during the race. Marko criticized both drivers for being “too impetuous” in their battle. Lawson even made an inappropriate gesture towards Perez but later apologized, which Marko accepted.
Yuki Tsunoda also faced criticism from Marko due to two mistakes he made in Mexico. One of them was a spin during Q2 that not only ruined his lap but also affected Lawson’s run. “I think Yuki is feeling the pressure from Lawson; there is no other explanation for this mistake,” said Marko.
Fans might wonder if these comments will affect the drivers’ confidence.
What do you think about Marko’s comments? Are they fair or too harsh?
