Max Verstappen shrugged off concerns about a post-race investigation after an incident with Lewis Hamilton during Sunday’s disappointing outing for the world champion.
“Well the thing is that nothing happened, we didn’t even touch,” Verstappen told reporters after meeting with race stewards.
Interestingly, Verstappen was the only driver called to explain the situation.
“For me it’s a bit difficult to understand why we have the investigation after the race,” he said. “We explained our sides of the story, well Lewis was not there. I don’t think Lewis actually felt a lot for it, because if he really felt something for it then of course he’s there in the stewards room, right?”
The three-time world champion didn’t seem particularly concerned about potential penalties.
He pointed out that both drivers struggled throughout the weekend anyway.
“That’s just one little thing. The more important thing is that we have to look at our performance, which was not good.”
When asked if he was worried about the stewards’ final decision, Verstappen remained unfazed. Whether he finished ninth or got no points at all wouldn’t make much difference in his view.
“I think you know the problem is that we have so many rules, of course, so it’s always a complicated matter,” he added. “It’s always a bit weird that you have to go to the stewards for something that you didn’t have even a contact or whatever.”
Red Bull’s performance issues clearly troubled Verstappen more than any potential steward’s verdict.
