Lando Norris is finding his groove in the F1 title fight by simply caring less.
“In terms of removing some of those cares, it’s helped,” Norris admitted during the Brazil Grand Prix weekend.
The McLaren star opened up about how he’s transformed his approach to racing during what has become the most successful season of his career.
Norris explained that earlier parts of the season were much tougher mentally.
“It’s difficult because there were certainly some periods that were much tougher back then, which I worked hard to try and avoid as much as possible,” he said.
What’s changed? His emotional management.
“My mentality and general emotion have improved—that’s a good thing for me. Not that I’m an emotional person, but I care,” Norris explained. “In terms of removing some of those cares, it’s helped, and that allows me just to forget one last weekend.”
The 25-year-old British driver has been on fire lately, climbing back to the top of the drivers’ standings after dominating the Mexico City Grand Prix.
He kept that momentum going in Brazil, grabbing pole position for the Sprint race.
But Norris isn’t getting carried away with these achievements, keeping perspective about what really matters.
“It doesn’t change anything, absolutely not. It’s a very small achievement, not a bigger puzzle,” he said. “Fighting for a tenth more often—something that leads to winning a race—is incredible. When there’s a much bigger picture in mind, it feels like it means a lot less for a small amount of time.”
## “I can deal with a lot more now”
The mental growth Norris has experienced this season seems to be the key to his championship charge.
“I can deal with a lot more now than I could at the beginning of the season, even though I was also dealing with more difficulties back then than I am now,” he reflected.
This newfound resilience is paying dividends on track where it matters most.
“It’s difficult, but I would say I’m in a much better space than I was back then, for many different reasons,” Norris said. “I’m much better now than I was. It’s all part of learning.”
