Is Verstappen’s Engine Change at Spa Ill-Timed?

One season can be very different from another.

In 2023, Max Verstappen could start from the back and still win. But in 2024, with his almost perfect Red Bull Racing RB20, things are tougher. Catching up after a grid penalty to win the Belgian Grand Prix seems unlikely now. So, is it smart to use a fifth power unit at Spa?

Verstappen needed a fifth engine after the Canada mishap. This means he’ll get a ten-place grid penalty for exceeding the four-engine limit. The big question was when Red Bull would make this move. They chose Spa-Francorchamps because overtaking is easier on this track.

Verstappen Does Not Believe in Winning at Spa

On Thursday, Verstappen hinted he doesn’t expect to win at Spa. Even though he can move up through the field, McLaren and Mercedes are strong competitors now. Unlike last year, beating them seems nearly impossible.

Without the penalty, Verstappen would have been a top contender for victory at Spa. The track suits the RB20 with its long stretches ideal for Honda’s full speed. Fans might wonder why risk losing here when tracks like Zandvoort or Singapore will be even harder to win on?

Zandvoort or Singapore Better?

There’s a chance Verstappen could finish fifth on Sunday if his car performs well enough to win otherwise. Without penalties, circuits like Zandvoort and Singapore will still be tough due to strong competition; he might end up fifth there too. So why not wait for those races where losing less is more likely?

Red Bull Racing is taking a gamble; hopefully, they discussed it thoroughly with Verstappen. The last thing they want is another argument with their star driver if things don’t go as planned at Spa.

What do you think about Red Bull’s decision?
