The Sao Paulo Grand Prix was full of unexpected events, with chaos reigning supreme. Christian Horner, the Red Bull team principal, expressed his shock that the race wasn’t halted sooner due to the intense weather conditions.
Heavy rain drenched Brazil on Sunday, causing a delay in qualifying but allowing the race to eventually proceed. The track turned into a slippery challenge for drivers, leading to numerous incidents and the deployment of the safety car as conditions worsened.
Horner’s Reaction
As the rain intensified, racing became impossible, prompting the safety car’s intervention. However, this measure fell short when Franco Colapinto lost control and crashed dramatically, finally leading to a red flag decision by race control.
Horner found it surprising that the red flag came so late. He noted how difficult visibility was for drivers trying to keep their cars steady. “There were a couple of surprises for me in that race. One was that it wasn’t red flagged sooner. There were a lot of drivers that were feeling that the conditions were too unsafe,” he commented.
He also criticized the restarts after just an out lap and an in lap behind the safety car, describing them as overly ambitious attempts to resume racing before all cars had even caught up.
Fans might think it was risky to continue racing under such harsh conditions.
