Horner Calls for Constructive Discussion: ‘External Advantage Now in Play’

The past two weekends have been filled with heated debates about penalties in the 2024 championship. Many people involved have different ideas on whether the rules are fair or not.

Christian Horner thinks the penalties given to Verstappen in Mexico City were too strict, and he’s worried about how this might affect future races. “I think it’s something that really does need to get tidied up moving forward because there’s great racing going on,” Horner said. He believes that the rules should be fair and not give an advantage to drivers taking the outside line, which has traditionally been riskier. Now, it seems like having your nose ahead at a certain point is all it takes, even if you can’t make the corner.

Horner doesn’t like the idea of checking a rule book for every move on the track. He feels that these racers know what they’re doing and shouldn’t be bogged down by too many rules. Over-regulating could lead to behavior that’s not true to racing’s core principles.

Horner: ‘Perhaps we overcomplicate F1’

The current guidelines seem trickier than before, making it hard for everyone to be on the same page. Different stewards might see things differently, which makes consistency tough.

“Max will always drive aggressively according to what he thinks are the rules,” Horner explained. If he crosses a line, he’ll face a penalty, but Horner worries we’re making things too complicated. Fans might wonder if simpler rules would make races more exciting. He suggests having open talks between drivers and stewards to clearly define what’s acceptable as they head into four more intense races.

What do you think? Should they simplify the rules or keep them as they are?
