Hamilton vs Verstappen: Comparing F1 Champions’ Value

The two most dominant drivers in F1’s last decade are making bank, and they absolutely deserve it, according to Jacques Villeneuve.

Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton have completely owned Formula 1 for years. In fact, over the past 10 seasons, they’ve won every drivers’ championship except one – when Nico Rosberg took the crown in 2016.

When asked about Verstappen possibly earning more than Hamilton, Villeneuve had some interesting thoughts.

“Well, Lewis brings more money value. His international image goes beyond Formula One and racing. He’s known in circles that have nothing to do with racing,” the Canadian told a betting site.

Hamilton’s star power extends far beyond the track. He’s a global celebrity who moves in fashion, music, and activism circles.

But Verstappen brings plenty to the table too.

“Max is a pure racer and he brings wins and the victories to the team which ultimately has been bringing money to the team as well, so he’s definitely worth it,” Villeneuve explained.

The difference? Hamilton’s value comes partly from his massive profile outside the sport, while Verstappen’s comes almost entirely from his incredible racing skills.

“It’s from two different angles, basically,” Villeneuve added.

As a world champion himself, Villeneuve isn’t jealous of the massive paychecks these drivers are collecting. In fact, he thinks they might be underpaid compared to his era.

“I’ve won one championship so no I’m definitely not envious of both Lewis and Max making so much money. They’ve worked hard at it,” he said.

What’s really interesting is how Villeneuve sees the economics of the sport changing.

“I believe we are in an era where F1 is worth ten times more than what it was worth so if you compare it to that, compared to what Michael and I made in the 90s, they are actually not paid a lot.”

That’s a pretty surprising take considering the massive contracts these drivers command today.
