Romain Grosjean isn’t done with IndyCar just yet. The former F1 star has just landed a reserve driver role with Prema for 2025, keeping his foot firmly in the door of American open-wheel racing.
It’s a big move for Prema too. The racing powerhouse is making its IndyCar debut in 2025, bringing fresh energy to the series with an exciting driver lineup.
Callum Ilott and former Ferrari reserve driver Robert Shwartzman will be handling the full-time driving duties for the team.
For Grosjean, it’s a chance to stay connected after missing out on a full-time seat for 2025. The Frenchman has built quite a following in the States since his dramatic switch from Formula 1, and this role keeps him ready to jump in if needed.
If either Ilott or Shwartzman struggle to find their groove, Grosjean could get the call-up. He’s got the experience and speed that Prema might need during their rookie IndyCar season.
But he’s not just sitting around waiting for a phone call. Grosjean’s keeping busy in IMSA, America’s premier sports car series. He’s even teaming up with another ex-F1 driver, Daniil Kvyat, for the legendary 24 Hours of Daytona.
It’s a smart move for everyone involved. Prema gets an experienced backup driver who knows IndyCar inside and out, while Grosjean stays in the mix for potential opportunities down the road.
