George Russell has secured three pole positions in his Formula 1 career, starting with his first at the British Grand Prix in 2024. All these achievements have come while racing for Mercedes alongside Lewis Hamilton.
Russell, once dubbed ‘Mr Saturday’ during his Williams days, had high hopes of frequent pole positions after joining Mercedes in 2022. Despite the car’s struggles since then, he has managed to claim two more poles and consistently outperform Hamilton in 2024.
Russell’s Pole Positions
Russell became the 19th British driver to achieve a pole position in Formula 1 at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2022. Although Mercedes faced challenges with new regulations that season, Russell’s maiden pole was a standout moment. Max Verstappen had car issues during Q3, creating an opportunity for a surprise result. Many expected Ferrari to take advantage, but Russell’s last lap beat Carlos Sainz by less than a tenth of a second. Even though he fell behind his teammate during the race, he still finished third.
Nearly two years later came Russell’s second pole at the Canadian Grand Prix in 2024 with a time of 1:12:000 on his first Q3 run. The tricky conditions brought the grid closer together, but no one could surpass his time. Verstappen matched it but because Russell set it first, he took pole.
His third and perhaps most memorable pole came at Silverstone during his home Grand Prix in 2024. The session started wet but dried up by Q3. Both Mercedes drivers showed strong pace as conditions improved throughout qualifying. Hamilton initially grabbed provisional pole as the session ended, yet Russell found an extra tenth of a second to secure P1. Lando Norris completed an all-British top three on the grid, sending fans into excitement!
Fans might think this is just what they needed—a thrilling home victory!
So what do you think? Will George continue this streak?
