Apple TV Deal Could Signal F1’s Global Streaming Future
Stefano Domenicali isn’t closing the door on expanding F1’s Apple TV partnership worldwide after the streaming giant secured US broadcasting rights for next season.
“The world of media is quite fragmented and diverse. We need to respect that,” F1’s President and CEO told GPblog.
Domenicali believes Apple’s entry could actually push existing broadcasters to up their game.
“This is an incredible opportunity for every broadcaster to perform even better, because that’s what they should do.”
For now, F1’s focus remains on making the US deal work, but Domenicali hinted at bigger possibilities down the road.
“First, we need to make sure we do the right thing in this market. Then if opportunities open up elsewhere, let’s discuss it together—why not?”
“It’s just the start of a journey that could take us to different places,” he added.
The racing organization plans to invest heavily in making the US partnership successful before considering next steps.
Liberty Media’s President Derek Chang emphasized the complex nature of media rights deals, noting they never all expire at the same time.
“The actual structure is still market by market,” Chang explained. “Whether we see the appeal for what we’re going to do in the US transfer to other markets, we’ll see. We can be opportunistic about that.”
## Apple’s Tech Could Benefit All F1 Broadcasts
Apple executive Eddy Cue believes their innovations will improve F1 viewing for everyone—not just Apple subscribers.
“The existing broadcasters will hopefully get some benefits because we’ll push working together on making the broadcast better,” Cue said.
He pointed to technological advancements that could enhance the viewing experience across all platforms.
“The technology we brought last year to the movie and putting cameras in the cars are things we would like to see continued. If we do that, everyone will benefit.”
Despite the new Apple partnership, fans needn’t worry about Netflix’s popular “Drive to Survive” series. All three executives confirmed the behind-the-scenes show will continue unchanged.
