Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur doesn’t quite see eye to eye with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff about just how dominant McLaren has become in Formula 1.
The Dutch Grand Prix was a complete disaster for Ferrari. Both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton crashed out, leaving the team with zero points for the weekend as F1 returned from its summer break.
But the real story was McLaren’s incredible pace.
No one – not Ferrari, Mercedes, or even Red Bull – could keep up with the papaya-colored cars around the Zandvoort circuit. The only thing that prevented McLaren from scoring their fifth straight one-two finish was Lando Norris‘ DNF.
Wolff didn’t hold back after the race, saying McLaren was “humiliating” the rest of the field. The British team now has 584 points in the constructors’ championship, a massive 224-point advantage over Ferrari in second place.
Oscar Piastri‘s victory in the Netherlands helped extend his lead to 34 points in the drivers’ standings.
When asked about Wolff’s harsh assessment, Vasseur took a slightly different view.
“Not completely, because it’s not only the last stint. I think if you have a look at the race, in the middle of the second stint, I don’t know if [McLaren decided to push or not,” Vasseur explained.
“But, they were also much faster than everybody. I think they managed the first 10 laps of the second stint before the VSC, and when they decided to push, they were miles away.”
Ferrari still holds onto second place behind McLaren, but that gap is likely to grow as the season continues. Vasseur admits that nobody on the grid can match the British team’s speed right now.
“Clearly, they are a step ahead in quali, but much more than this in the race. But humiliation? I won’t go so far,” the team boss concluded.
