‘F1: The Movie’ Snags Two Critics’ Choice Awards as Accolades Keep Rolling In
Brad Pitt’s high-octane Formula 1 film continues its victory lap after winning Best Editing and Best Sound at the Critics’ Choice Awards on January 4.
The movie scored an impressive seven nominations overall at the prestigious event.
Starring Pitt as veteran driver Sonny Hayes alongside Damson Idris as rookie sensation Joshua Pearce, the film has been both a critical darling and commercial powerhouse. It actually became Pitt’s highest-grossing movie ever at the box office.
Fans who missed it in theaters can now catch it streaming on AppleTV.
The film’s technical excellence was recognized with Stephen Mirrione taking home the Best Editing trophy, while the sound team of Al Nelson, Gwendolyn Yates Whittle, Gary A. Rizzo, Juan Peralta, and Gareth John claimed the Best Sound award.
It also earned nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Score, Best Song, Best Visual Effects, and Best Stunt Design—pretty much sweeping the technical categories.
And this is just the beginning of what could be a thrilling awards season for the film co-produced by seven-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton.
The Golden Globes have already nominated ‘F1: The Movie’ in two categories: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Original Score.
Things look even more promising for the Academy Awards, where the film has been shortlisted in four categories: Cinematography, Original Score, Sound, and Visual Effects. Ed Sheeran’s driving anthem “Drive” is also in contention for Original Song.
## Sequel Already in the Works?
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali dropped hints about a potential follow-up when asked about future plans.
“Well, I think that is ‘never say never,'” Domenicali teased. “We’re working on a plan.”
He tempered expectations about timing, adding: “It will not be eventually too soon, because we need to digest it. By the way, we’re going to launch Apple, we’re going to launch that on December 12, so there will be a longer effect of the first movie.”
