Major manufacturers are flocking to endurance racing’s biggest stage, and McLaren might be next to join the party.
The World Endurance Championship (WEC) is seeing a massive surge in interest lately. Ferrari, Peugeot, BMW, Alpine, and Aston Martin have all jumped into the premier hypercar class, with some already racing and others gearing up to join.
Now McLaren’s getting ready to throw its hat in the ring.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown hasn’t been shy about his interest in both WEC and its American cousin, IMSA. According to Racer, his dream of bringing McLaren to endurance racing is close to becoming reality.
The plan is taking shape with some serious firepower behind it. Dallara, the same Italian company that builds Haas F1’s chassis, is reportedly on board to construct McLaren’s hypercar.
There’s just one piece of the puzzle still missing: the engine. McLaren’s currently shopping around for the perfect power unit partner to bring their hypercar to life.
This wouldn’t be Brown’s first rodeo in endurance racing. He’s already got skin in the game as co-owner of United Autosports, running LMP2 cars in IMSA and European Le Mans series. While his team can’t normally compete in WEC, they do get to mix it up at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans.
With McLaren potentially joining the hypercar class, we could be looking at one of the most competitive eras in endurance racing history. The grid’s already stacked with iconic manufacturers, and McLaren’s entry would just raise the stakes even higher.
