Max Verstappen‘s aggressive driving style has set a new standard in F1, and Lando Norris needs to step up his game if he wants to challenge the champion. That’s the word from former F1 driver Johnny Herbert, who’s now keeping things in check as an FIA steward.
The two drivers had some intense battles throughout 2024, going wheel-to-wheel in Austria, Austin, and Mexico City. But it wasn’t enough to stop Verstappen from clinching another title.
“Norris needs to stand up to Verstappen more often,” Herbert told Coin Poker. “He’s admitted himself that he hasn’t brought his A-game this year.”
But there’s good news for Norris fans. Herbert says the young Brit knows what he needs to do and is ready to make changes.
It’s not just Norris who’s taking notes from Verstappen’s playbook. More drivers are adopting the champion’s take-no-prisoners approach on track.
“This is a really good moment where many drivers are thinking the same as Max has done,” Herbert explained. “It’s going to be massively interesting to see who comes out on top next year.”
Herbert thinks we’re in for an exciting season ahead. “It might well be scrappy next year but that’s what you want in Formula 1, some sharp elbows, allied to common sense. Max loads pressure on everyone.”
As an FIA steward, Herbert will have a front-row seat to judge any on-track battles, similar to his role in the controversial Mexico City race.
