F1 News Today: Vowles Criticized as ‘Over-Estimated’, Porsche Unveils F1 Future Plans

James Vowles has faced criticism this season despite his efforts to push Williams to the front.

Some think it’s unrealistic for him to expect such a quick turnaround, even with new signings.

Challenges and Criticism:

Vowles aims to revive Williams, but Marc Surer isn’t impressed. Surer told Formel1.de, “I have often said that James Vowles is simply over-estimated. Jost Capito built a car with his people. James Vowles came to Williams, took the car, and they drove fully into the points. All the praises went to James Vowles, not the one who built the car. Now, the car is too heavy and too slow.” He doubts the team will lead soon, even with Carlos Sainz joining them. However, he does believe they’ll score more points than this season.

Meanwhile, Porsche’s motorsport boss Thomas Laudenbach confirmed that F1 is no longer in their plans. “It is off the table: right now F1 is not a task for us and we are not spending any energy on that,” he stated. “We are only focused on what we do right now, and if you look at it, we have many different activities: we are well-occupied and extremely happy with what we do.”

Adrian Newey’s Future:

Damon Hill shared his thoughts on Adrian Newey’s next move during an episode of the F1 Nation podcast. Newey announced in May he’d leave Red Bull Racing by early 2025. Ferrari, McLaren, and Aston Martin are potential destinations for him. Hill thinks Aston Martin would be ideal: “Aston have got headroom, they have got the resources, and they have also got unfulfilled potential, which Adrian could be really useful for.”

Fans might wonder if Newey’s move will shake things up in F1.

McLaren’s Driver Strategy:

This season has seen a close battle between McLaren drivers after both won their first F1 races. CEO Zak Brown defended having two number one drivers in an Autosport interview. “They both want to be number one and they are both number ones. We just don’t have any number twos,” he explained. He believes both can race hard while respecting each other as equals. Yet, this choice might prove costly with ten races left and a tight title race ahead .
