The German Grand Prix hasn’t been on the Formula 1 calendar for years, but it might come back someday.
A group of investors has taken over the Hockenheimring and is investing millions to make it ready for the future.
Hockenheim invests millions in circuit
Over the next five to ten years, the investor group emodrom plans to pour 250 million euros into the Hockenheimring. The city council also approved selling 74.99% of Hockenheimring GmbH shares to these new investors. Emodrom Group will pay around six million euros.
Tim Brauer from emodrom Group shared their vision: “We have been working in the background for more than four years to further develop the Hockenheimring as a leading racing circuit and are now keen to realise future-oriented projects. Of course, we are also thinking about Formula 1, but we approach such considerations with great caution,” he told Welt.
Investors have already spent about 40 million euros on improvements at Hockenheimring. They expanded the Porsche Experience Centre, built a hotel, and added a Motorworld. Now, they aim to refurbish the track and make it appealing again for F1 races.
“We are not going to do anything crazy financially, but we are trying to find ways to bring Formula 1 back to Germany,” Brauer said. The last F1 race in Germany was at Nürburgring in 2020, while Hockenheim last hosted in 2019 with Max Verstappen winning a thrilling wet race.
