Does Norris Regret His Choice? ‘Selfishness is Key in This Sport’

Lando Norris let Oscar Piastri win at the Hungarian Grand Prix. He admitted he was unsure about letting his teammate pass because in F1, you have to think of yourself first.

“Things are always going to go through your mind because you have got to be selfish in this sport at times,” Norris said. “You’ve got to think of yourself. That’s priority number one, is to think of yourself. I’m also a team player, so my mind was going pretty crazy at the time. I know what we’ve done in the past between Oscar and myself, and he’s helped me plenty of times. I think this is a different situation. This is not someone helping one another. I was put into a position and we were undoing that position change.”

Norris ‘Optimistic’ About McLaren’s Future

Norris also talked about his hopes for the driver’s championship, feeling he might’ve lost important points against Max Verstappen today. “I get it and I know a lot of people are going to say the gap between me and Max is pretty big,” he said. “But, if Red Bull and Max make mistakes like they did today and continue to do that, and as a team, we continue to improve and have weekends like we’ve had this weekend, we can turn it around.”

Fans might wonder if Norris will be more selfish next time.

“It’s still optimistic,” he continued. “It’s still a big goal to say we can close 70 points. And as a driver, I can close 70 points in half a season.” Then he added how giving away six or seven points makes him think twice for sure.

Will Norris act differently next time? “It depends,” he said thoughtfully. He believes the team could have handled things better by boxing Oscar first so they wouldn’t even need this discussion now.

In conclusion, Norris thinks both he and the team could learn from this experience moving forward .
