Sergio Perez had a rough time in his RB20 during the recent races. He managed to earn only eight points over the last four Grand Prix events.
Meanwhile, Max Verstappen, his teammate, clinched victory in three of those races. Damon Hill didn’t hold back on Sky Sports, bluntly stating that Perez is “nowhere near up to speed.”
How does Hill view Perez’s performances?
Perez faced a grid penalty at the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya and knew qualifying would be key. He qualified eighth but started from P11 due to the penalty. By race end, he was back in eighth place. Throughout the weekend, he struggled with car comfort and felt that finishing eighth was “the maximum.” This is troubling since Verstappen has won seven of the last ten races.
“It’s difficult to understand, isn’t it? He’s got the best car next to McLaren, obviously, but he’s not able to match Max,” said Damon Hill. “Now, that means four or five grid places [sit between Perez and Verstappen]. It’s disastrous really for Red Bull if they want to get him scoring maximum [points], or even helping Max in defending in races. He’s nowhere near up to speed,” added Hill.
After the race, Perez told Viaplay that eighth was all he could manage in Spain. “There was not much hope. I think we got the maximum we could possibly get, but we just have to get our head down and hopefully come back.” Fans might feel disappointed hearing this from a top driver.
Perez hopes for better results at Red Bull’s home race in Austria. What do you think? Will he bounce back?
