Andretti Discusses Red Bull’s Problems: ‘That’s When It All Began to Unravel’

Red Bull Racing kicked off the 2024 Formula One season with high hopes of dominating once again, but things took a turn for the worse. The team’s struggles began around the time Adrian Newey decided to leave, and racing legend Mario Andretti thinks Newey never got the praise he deserved.

Andretti believes that when Newey stepped back, Red Bull’s troubles started. In an interview, Andretti shared his thoughts on Red Bull’s decline after their stellar performance in 2023. “I’m going to say something that I feel, again, that whether it’s by coincidence or not, but the minute that Adrian Newey distanced himself [from] the team, things started to go wrong,” he said.

Andretti is a huge fan of Newey and feels he was never fully appreciated for his incredible talent in Formula One. “His abilities are something that are incredible,” Andretti mentioned, recalling how well they worked together early in Newey’s career. Fans might wonder if Red Bull underestimated what they had with him.

Newey is now heading to Aston Martin, where he’ll have a new role as a technical partner and shareholder. Lawrence Stroll’s team announced this big change at their Silverstone headquarters. Andretti thinks Aston Martin will be lucky to have him on board. “Aston Martin will be very, very fortunate to have him on the team,” Andretti stated.

Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll‘s team see themselves as “the F1 team of the future.” They’ve invested heavily in their technical staff and will use Honda power units starting in 2026. Andretti believes they have what it takes to become a leading team. “Well, why not? Yes, the possibilities are there,” he concluded.
